Otto Neugebauer

1986 Balzan Prize for History of Science

For his fundamental research into the exact sciences in the ancient world, in particular, on ancient Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Greek astronomy, which has put our understanding of ancient science on a new footing and illuminated its transmission to the classical and medieval worlds. For his outstanding success in promoting interest and further research in the history of science.

Otto Neugebauer was born in Innsbruck, Austria, on May 26, 1899; he is an American citizen;
Privatdozent at the University of Göttingen (1927-1932);
Professor of Mathematics at the University of Copenhagen (1933-1938);
Professor of Mathematics (1939-1947), then Professor of the History of Mathematics (1947-1969) at Brown University; Professor Emeritus since 1969;
member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, since 1950;
member of the American Philosophical Society, of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, of the British Academy, of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Paris, of the Danish Royal Academy, of the Académie Royale de Belgique, of the Oesterreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften and of many others;
Doctor «Honoris Causa» from the University of St. Andrews, Brown University and Princeton University.

His scientific production includes more than 300 works. Some of his major books are:
— Mathernatical Cuneiform Texts (1945, reprinted 1983);
— Astronornical Cuneiform Texts (3 vols) (1955);
— The Exact Sciences in Antiquity (3 editions: 1951, 1957, 1962; translations into Russian 1968 and into Italian 1974);
— Greek Horoscopes (1959);
— Egyptian Astronomical Texts (3 vols) (1960-69);
— A History of Ancient Mathematical Astronomy (3 vols) (1975);
— Ethiopic Astronomy and Computus (1979).
