Palis-Balzan Symposium on Dynamical Systems in Rio (July 2012)

The first Palis-Balzan Symposium was held from 25 to 29 June in Brazil, at IMPA (Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada) Rio de Janeiro.
This symposium was part of Jacob Palis’ Research Project - Dynamical Systems, Chaotic Behaviour-Uncertainty, in the context of the second half of the Balzan Prize conferred in 2010 to Jacob Palis. The symposium was also supported by IMPA, CAPES, CNPq and FAPERJ.

The coordinators of the Balzan Research Project are Jacob Palis, and Jean-Christophe Yoccoz, 1994 - Fields Medal Winner. Another 20 renowned mathematicians, from Brazil (Artur Avila, Carlos Gustavo Moreira, Enrique Pujals, Lorenzo Diaz, Marcelo Viana, Jose Maria Pacífico, Welington de Melo), from France (Carlos Matheus, Sylvain Crovisier, Christian Bonatti and Pierre Berger), from U.S. (Marco Martens, Michael Lyubich), from the UK (Sebastian van Strien), from China (Lan Wen) and from Uruguay (Martin Sambarino and Alvaro Rovella), and about 10 young Ph.D.s, are involved.
This symposium aimed to promote research at the highest level in the dynamical systems area, especially in the topics cited above, with the effective participation of top national and foreign researchers.

"The resumes of the contributions indicate our notable progress along the lines of the Palis-Balzan Research Project" Jacob Palis said. This symposium was attended by over 100 researchers, including 26 foreigners and 81 Brazilians (including a large number of masters and doctoral students from Rio de Janeiro).

Jean-Christophe Yoccoz, Collège de France, Fields Medal 1994 Winner, Co-coordinator of the Research Project stated at the end of his lecture, the last of the symposium: "This was a great Symposium. Jacob Palis and myself invite you to the second Balzan-Palis Symposium, which will take place at the Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris, from 10-14th June, 2013."
