THE BALZAN PRIZEWINNERS 2013

The names of the 2013 Balzan Prizewinners were proclaimed in Milan in a public announcement:

ANDRÉ VAUCHEZ (France), Université de Paris Ouest Nanterre, for Medieval History 
MANUEL CASTELLS
 (Spain), University of Southern California (USA), for Sociology
ALAIN ASPECT
(France), École Polytechnique, Palaiseau, for Quantum Information Processing and Communication
PASCALE COSSART
(France), Institut Pasteur, Paris, for Infectious diseases: basic and clinical aspects.

The Prizewinners were announced on Monday 9 September by the Chairman of the General Prize Committee, Salvatore Veca, with the President of the Balzan “Prize” Foundation, Bruno Bottai. The profiles of the winners and the citations were presented by four members of the General Prize Committee.
 
The Balzan Prizes 2013 will be awarded in Berne on 15 November

The amount of each of the four 2013 Balzan Prizes is 750,000 Swiss Francs (approx. €610,000; $800,000; £515,000). Half of the amount must be destined by the winners to research projects
