Armand Borel

1992 Balzan Prize for Mathematics

For his fundamental contributions to the theory of Lie groups, algebraic groups, and arithmetic groups, and for his indefatigable action in favour of high quality in mathematical research and the propagation of new ideas.

ARMAND BOREL was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds on May 21, 1923; he is a Swiss and an American citizen;
assistant (1947-49), then professor (1955-57 and 1983-86) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich;
Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris (1949-50);
temporary professorship of Algebra at the University of Geneva (1950-52);
member (1952-54) and professor (1957- ) at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton; Visiting Lecturer at the University of Chicago (1954-55);
has been invited by numerous European, American and Indian universities as well as by a Chinese academy to hold lectures;
member of 5 academies;
some of his honors are a honorary degree from the University of Geneva, the Brouwer Medal of the Dutch Mathematical Society and the Steele Prize of the American Mathematical Society.
