Roger Revelle

1986 Balzan Prize for Oceanography/Climatology

For his important contributions to oceanography and climatology, in particular, for his fundamental research on the increasing content of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and its serious consequences for humanity.

Roger Revelle was born on March 7, 1909 in Seattle, Washington; he is a U.S. citizen;
Research Assistant to Professor of Oceanography (1931-1950) and Director (1950- 1964) of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego;
Head of the Geophysics Branch, Office of Naval Research (1946-1948);
Dean of the School of Science and Engineering and Chief Campus Officer at the University of California, San Diego (1957-1961);
Science Advisor to the Secretary of the Interior, Washington, D.C. (1961-1963);
University Dean of Research at the University of California (1963-1964);
Member of the Education Commission of the Government of India (1964-1966);
Richard Saltonstall Professor of Population Policy and Director of the Harvard Center for Population Studies, Harvard University (1964-1976);
Professor of Science and Public Policy at the University of California, San Diego;
Member of many academies and institutions such as the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society;
Honorary degrees from Pomona, Carleton, Colby, Williams and Dartmouth Colleges;
Bucknell, Utah State, Carnegie Mellon, Old Dominion and Harvard Universities and the Universities of Massachusetts and Miami;
The Revelle College of the University of California, San Diego is named after him.
Roger Revelle is the author of more than 300 publications: scientific works, papers, communications, conferences, etc.
