Harmon Craig

Prix Balzan 1998 pour la géochimie

Pionnier des sciences de la terre, Harmon Craig a utilisé les différents instruments de la géochimie isotopique pour résoudre des problèmes d’une importance fondamentale et d’un intérêt immédiat pour l’étude de l’atmosphère, de l’hydrosphère et de la lithosphère.

HARMQN CRAIG est né 8 New York City le 15 mars 1926; il est citoyen des Etats-Unis.

Actuellement il est Research Professor de Géochimie et d’Océanographie au Graduate Department and Geological Research Division, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, et au Revelle College, University of California à San Diego, La Jolla.

Carrière académique et de chercheur: 1951-1955:

Research Associate, Enrico Fermi Institute for Nuclear Studies, Université de Chicago;

Depuis 1955: Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Université de Californie; 1965-1968: directeur du Department of Earh Sciences, UCSD, et Division of Earth Sciences, SIO.

Visiting Professor à l’Université de Pise, Laboratoire de Géologie Nucléaire, et à l’Université de Berne, lnstitut de

Physique.

1971-1988: responsable des Earth and Planetary Science Letters;

1987-1997: membre de la rédaction du Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research.

Il a reçu de nombreux Prix et Récompenses tant au niveau américain qu’international.

Il a été Responsable scientifique dans environ 70 expéditions en mer et sur terre.
