Jean-Pierre Serre

1985 Balzan Prize for Mathematics

For his pioneering work in and major contributions to algebraic topology, algebraic geometry and number theory, in particular, for his original in-depth renewal of the foundations and techniques of algebraic topology and geometry.

Jean-Pierre Serre was born in Bâges, France, on September 15, 1926; he is a French citizen;

attaché, then charged with the researches at the CNRS (1948-1953) and finally head of the researches at the CNRS (1953-1954);

professor at the Faculty of Sciences of Nancy in 1954;

Peccot lecturer at the Collège de France in 1955;

professor at the Collège de France, chair of Algebra and Geometry since 1956; fellow of the Académie des Sciences de Paris, foreign fellow of the Boston American Academy of Arts and Sciences, of the London Royal Society, of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen, of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and of the Kungl. Vetenskapsakademien of Sweden as well as honorary fellow of the London Mathematical Society;

honorary degree from the universities of Cambridge, Stockholm and Glasgow.
