Walter Gehring

2002 Balzan Prize for Developmental Biology

For his seminal contribution to the discovery of a universal principle underlying the body plan and eye development in metazoans.

Walter Jakob Gehring, am 20. März 1939 in Zürich geboren (†2014), ist schweizerischer Staatsbürger.Er ist emeritierter Professor der Universität Basel, lehrte dort von 1972 bis 2009 in der Abteilung der Zellbiologie am Biozentrum.
Nach seinen Studien in Zoologie an der Universität Zürich wurde er Forschungsassistent von Professor Ernst Hadorn (1963-67). Anschliessend emigrierte er in die Vereinigten Staaten, wo er sich als Postdoktorand die Grundkenntnisse der Molekularbiologie an der Yale Universität erwarb. 1969 wurde er zum ausserordentlichen Professor in den Abteilungen Anatomie und Molekulare Biophysik der Yale Universität ernannt, wo er bis 1972 tätig war, bevor er in die Schweiz zurückkehrte.

Er ist zur Zeit Mitherausgeber oder Redaktionsmitglied der folgenden internationalen Zeitschriften:
“The Journal of Experimental Zoology”, “Mechanisms of Development”, “Trends in Genetics”, “Development, Growth and Differentiation”.

Er ist ausländisches oder ordentliches Mitglied der US National Academy of Sciences, der Royal Society London, der Académie des Sciences (Institut de France), der Königlichen Schwedischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher und der Academia Europaea.

Walter Jakob Gehring hat, auch unter Mitwirkung anderer Wissenschaftler, über 230 Arbeiten herausgegeben.
