Michael Stolleis

2000 Balzan Prize for Legal History since 1500

A leading historian of German law, in particular public law, he has explored in depth the fundamental concepts of public law on which the modern State is founded, his work being well known both among scholars and the educated public at large, in Germany, in Europe, and in the United States.

Michael Stolleis, born on 20 July 1941 (†2021) in Ludwigshafen, is a German citizen.

After studying in Heidelberg, Würzburg and Munich, in 1973 he passed his Habilitation exam in Administrative and Public Law, History of Modern Law and Ecclesiastical Law. He obtained his first academic post at Frankfurt University in 1974. Since 1991 he has been the Director of the Max-Planck-Institut for the History of European Law.

His areas of expertise are Public Law, particularly Social law and above all the history of European Law in the modern age.

He is an ordinary member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz (1992) and of the Scientific Society in Frankfurt, correspondent member of the Academies in Berlin, Göttingen and Helsinki as well as of the Scientific Society in Lund (Sweden). In 1991, he received the Leibniz Prize of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and in 1994 the Research Award of the Sveriges Riksbank. In 1999 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lund.
