Peter Hall

Premio Balzan 2005 per la storia sociale e culturale delle città dall'inizio del XVI secolo

Per il suo straordinario contributo alla storia delle idee relative alla pianificazione urbana, la sua analisi acuta dei problemi fisici, sociali ed economici delle città moderne e le sue approfondite ricerche storiche sulla creatività culturale nella vita delle città.

Sir Peter Hall, born in London on 19 March 1932 (*1932-†2014), is a British citizen.

He is Professor of Planning and Regeneration at the Bartlett School of Architecture and Planning, University College London. 


He received his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Cambridge and has taught at the London School of Economics, at the University of Reading (1968-1988), where he was Dean of the Faculty of Urban and Regional Studies and at the University of California at Berkeley (1980-1992), where he is Professor Emeritus of City and Regional Planning. 

From 1991-1994 he was Special Adviser on Strategic Planning to the Secretary of State for the Environment, with special reference to issues of London and South East regional planning including the East Thames Corridor (Thames Gateway) and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link. 

In 1998-1999 he was a member of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Urban Task Force and from 1995 to 1999 Chairman of the Town and Country Planning Association, of which he is now President and a member of its Board of Trustees. 


He was a founder member of the Regional Studies Association and first editor of its journal Regional Studies (1967-1978). He is joint editor of the journal Built Environment. He has just completed direction of a two-year, seven-country study of Polycentric Mega-City-Regions in Europe, financed by a 2.4 million grant from the European Union, to be published in book form (The Polycentric Metropolis) in London in Spring 2006. 

He was knighted by Her Majesty The Queen in 1998 “for services to the Town and Country Planning Association”, received the Founder’s Medal of the Royal Geographical Society for distinction in research, and is an Honorary member of the Royal Town Planning Institute, which awarded him its Gold Medal in 1993. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and a member of the Academia Europaea. He holds fourteen honorary doctorates from universities in the UK, Sweden and Canada.
