The essay takes up the Lectio Magistralis given by Joan Martinez-Alier (Balzan Prize 2020 for Environmental Challenges) in Milan at the conclusion of the announcement of the winners of the Balzan Prizes, on 12 September 2022, and the speech given by the Spanish economist at the 11th IinteR-La+B seminar the following day.
